Voices for Characters

Postby Balkin on Tue May 12, 2009 12:27 am

Ok, so I've been reading for a few months now, and I have to ask...

Do you have any specific voices in mind when you create/write characters? Like "THIS character sounds like THAT actor/actress"?

The reason I ask, is because whenever Count Tethik it talking, I hear the voice of Jeremy Irons! http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000460/

He's the only character so far that's popped into my head with a voice. I just wondered if anyone else associated any other characters with a voice!

Fun idea! And yes, there are some.

Mentl's voice is, frankly, mine. We're the same size (or were when I was 26) and both come from the same place with many of the same influences. Zona's voice is, ideally, Rosalind Russell in "The Front Page," a contralto, but not a deep alto like the recently departed Bea Arthur, or like some female bodybuilders. (Zona's frame is, after all, natural and not the result of mucking around with her hormones.) Jeremy Irons is an excellent choice for Tethik, I think. I always heard him as a very sophisticated Englishman. Yanora is Katherine Hepburn - always has been. Not sure about Tula or Maldik. Morcai's voice is the English technician I used to work with, yeh? :D

I laugh every time I go back and re-read the parts with Morcai!

I've known more than one Brit over the years and have voice in mind every time I hear "Yeh?" as well... :p
