6/6/2008: Pawn to Urrt’s Eye One…Check!

Postby Retiarius on Fri Jun 06, 2008 6:38 am

Wow, those game pieces must be pretty dense. Must be made out of Urrt skulls. :P

They wouldn’t let him have that game when he was a little urrt. They kept telling him, “Your don’t want that, kid! You’ll put your eye out!”

You realize, now, that the fans will insist on complete rules to that game. :P

 It really doesn't take much to put out an eye-they're really pretty soft. The hard part is actually hitting such small targets-and on Urrt faces they seem to be even smaller than humans. Tula's skills obviously go beyond being literally bewitching

Yeah, about the only thing we know so far is that you're not supposed to throw game pieces at your opponent. At least, I think that's one of the rules.... :?

Urtt Mom: "Don't put everything in your mouth! You're going to choke!" Even if the Heimlich manuever is known there (and worked on Urtts) Tula's not about to help him.

I wonder if the guards like to play games?

Hey, Tula? There's this fly buzzing around my room that's bugging me - you think you could swat it it mid-flight?

What gets me is the incredibly casual way she attacks him...

Why ... do you smile so?

Postby MadCelt on Fri Jun 06, 2008 6:09 pm

"Why ... do you smile so?"

I am smiling because our dear author has outsmarted me. I was predicting in my head how I thought things would go -- and I imagine myself a pretty clever fellow...

But THIS strip totally surprised me -- and pleasantly so!

Gorshash you poor, poor shmuck. You're not human and I shouldn't feel sorry for you, but I am laughing at how your overconfidence got you into such a pickle.

You're going to lose your "Gets to Wear the Black Robe" license.
On the bright side, eyepatches look badass on villains!

And yes, I want the complete rules on how to play Tuntoch... and regular updates... and more background maps. I'm making a donation today so you can buy some Red Bull!

Thanks again for an exciting and unpredictable story!

Figures you play the Erogenian game by throwing the peices at your opponent.

You're very welcome. At this point, I'm pleased to say, they pretty much write themselves. I just render the stuff and choose the layout the font.

Thanks so much for the ducats! Prepare for something coming your way in thanks.

So far ...

Postby JEDraft on Sat Jun 07, 2008 1:23 am

The game hasn't even been properly tested, so the rules are not ready, even if I wanted to give `em out. I will finalize it as soon as I get the time, put it out in pdf, and then you'll see if I'm a better storyteller than a game designer. :)

Tuntoch, as a game, is ancient even by Erogenian standards, and is played in Kivalia, Erogenia, even in Sandak and other, lesser-known places in the continent. Like chess, it was supposedly invented as an alternative to warfare and to while away long winter confinements in the northern latitudes.

It is a game of siege, where the inner two rings are the "fortress," and the goal is to break through and have a King or Queen piece (The conical pieces) from the attacking side in the center ring. A "set" consists of two games where the players alternate offense and defense. On defense, the pieces have different moves and limitations than offense, and the number of pieces is smaller.

Yeah but, dude, I'm amazed they can get the rules straight. I mean, this is a pre-industrial, pre-globilization world. Heck, is this world even a globe?

Anyway, my point is that I've gotten into rules disputes over common chess. And I got my chess instruction from Chessmaster 8000. Unless Tuntoch is really, really simple, I wouldn't be suprised if people from various regions got into arguments over the game.

Fun and Games

Postby Trader Jimm on Sat Jun 07, 2008 3:48 pm

Chess has a long and colorful history. As anyone knows who has struggled to learn the rules, there are odd exceptions. Most of those were changes to an earlier, simpler version. En passant, castling, the two-space rule, and I think even promotion were added at some point to improve the game. The relative strength of pieces has even varied a bit over the centuries. Certainly there were regional variations until globalization got started.

So if Tuntoch has been around long enough, it may have non-intuitive "features" that have been added to make the game more fair, or move along a little faster.

Gorshash’s first mistake…

Postby Retiarius on Sun Jun 08, 2008 2:37 pm

Gorshash’s first mistake was not reading The Top 100 Things I’d Do If I Became an Evil Overlord. :P

Regional differences as in:
In this land the attacker throws the peices at the defender, who uses the board as a shield.

Did you miss that part of comic, where ancient history of Erogenians was detailed along with their evil god who is now worshipped by urrts?

M, L, or XL?

Postby MadCelt on Mon Jun 09, 2008 2:51 pm

I wasn't expecting swag in return for a donation, so I am again pleasantly surprised.

As to your question about size: M, L, or XL...
My six-pack is a pony keg. I wear XXL. XL works if there are only the 3 choices you mentioned. (Middle age spread has me in its Kung-Fu grip.)

I just noticed that Goulash said he has two guards outside that will come in at the first sound of alarm.

Choking noises aren't sounds of alarm?
